The Broadcast Meteorology Program began in 1986. Initially ten courses were developed with the assistance of the National Weather Association (NWA). These courses began with the very basics and progressed to the advanced. An operational or applied approach was taken in the BMP courses as they were designed primarily for broadcasters who wished to improve their knowledge of meteorology. Therefore, while the theory was introduced, the focus was placed on data analysis for the purpose of developing an accurate forecast. While the applied approach is still emphasized, additional more advanced courses have been added to the BMP. In addition, the BMP includes related geoscience courses to prepare broadcasters to be the station scientist. There are currently 17 courses offered over a three year program of study.
Our program has attracted students from nearly all of the 50 states as well as from Puerto Rico, Canada, and other foreign countries. Thirty students began the program in 1986. By 1991, 100 students had enrolled and enrollments steadily increased for many years to come. To date, over 1500 students have successfully completed the Broadcast Meteorology Program.
