Credit for Prior Learning

Transferring Credit for BMP/OMP courses:

Transfer credit can be accepted in lieu of BMP or OMP courses offered through the Geosciences Distance Learning Programs if the following criteria are met:

• Courses must be from an accredited institution.
• Courses must be the equivalent to the program’s course.
• Course must have been taken within the past 5 years.
• Student must have earned a grade of “B” or better in the course.

To request a waiver for a course please send a copy of your transcript with the courses you wish to have evaluated marked. Transcripts can be fax to 662-325-9423 or sent to:

All courses taken at another accredited institution are recorded on the student’s permanent record, however the student’s academic advisor determines the applicability of the work toward degree requirements.

Acceptable Courses for Transfer

There are several methods in which a student may take courses to fulfill degree requirements:

• Take on-line courses through Mississippi State’s Center for Distance Education
• For a list of available distance courses please visit the Master Course Schedule. On the campus drop-down box, please select "Distance Education"
• Take courses through other regionally accredited institutions (on or off campus)
• Credit by Examination
• Advanced Placement Examinations
• College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Mississippi State University accepts courses from all regionally accredited college institutions. In order to transfer a course to MSU for degree purposes a student must have the course evaluated prior to enrollment. Course descriptions must be sent to mary@geosci.msstate.edu.
