The Teachers in Geosciences distance learning program began in the Fall of 1998. The TIG program was designed for K-12 teachers teaching earth science or integrating earth science concepts in their science curriculum. However, while the majority of TIG students are teachers, many other professionals such as Extension Agents, Park Service employees, Emergency Management personnel, and military personnel have also benefited from the program. Students have come from all 50 states, as well as from several foreign countries, including Switzerland, Mexico, Chile, and Canada.
There were thirty-five students in the first TIG graduating class. Since that time, enrollments have steadily increased. Over 900 students have successfully completed the TIG program since its beginning.
