If you are looking to start a new career in teaching, the alternate route distance programs at MSU will assist you in realizing your dream. Prospective students may pursue initial teacher licensure online through the Master of Arts in Teaching – Secondary (MATS) degree program.
Attention if you made at least a 21 on the ACT with no subscore below 18, you are exempt from Praxis Core!
**We are no longer able to place students in Georgia for an internship. Residents living in the state of Georgia will not be eligible for licensure.**
What is the MATS program?
The MATS program is designed for those holding a bachelor's degree in a content or discipline area other than education and seeking an initial teaching license in secondary education. The 36 hour degree can be completed entirely online via distance learning from virtually anywhere in the state of Mississippi and beyond. Students can earn initial licensure and then teach full time while completing the degree.
Through the program students will be eligible to receive a
- 3 year Class A non-renewable license after admission to the MATS program and successful completion of EDS 8243 and EPY 8473
- 5 year Class A renewable license after receiving a 3 year Class A non-renewable license and completing EDS 8886
- 5 year Class AA renewable license after completion of the MATS degree program (coursework and comprehensive examination)
Students in the MATS program may choose one of the following content areas as their initial licensure area but may choose to add additional endorsements to their license later:
- English/Languages Arts
- Social Studies
- Physical Education
